Bengali Cuisine

Known for its subtle yet spicy flavors, Bengali food is a must try. Not only must you try the savory food but the desserts are a must try.

Besides West Bengal, states like Assam and Tripura and also Bangladesh are big on Bengali cuisine. Bengali people make maximum use of mustard oil in their cooking. Like most regions of India, rice is a staple diet for the people of Bengal.

Fish and meat are an integral part of a Bengali's food palette. In fact, fish is so important that it is part of at least one course of every meal. Though they are extensive meat eaters, Bengalis make use of vegetables in the form of stocks and curry. They make use of unwanted parts of vegetables like the peel, stalk and its leaves to make the stock.

In Kolkata, there is a mix of Chinese, Indian and Tandoori cuisine. Kolkata is famous for its Kebabs and Biryani. For meat lovers, the mutton biryani should be on your list. And fun fact, Kolkata was the birthplace for Indo-Chinese cuisine.

Moving on, the most enjoyable part of food- dessert! Sandesh, Rasamalai and Rasagola are Bengali sweets loved by people all over the country. they are all made out of milk.

Another dessert, though it is usually not considered to be a dessert is Mishti Doi. It is made out of yogurt and charred sugar and is preseved in earthen pots. No Bengali's meal is complete without Mishti Doi.

This is just a gist of what Bengali food is about. If I go in detail, then let's just say that the food is so fascinating that there are no words to express it!
