Kalighat Mandir

View of the Kalighat Temple   Kalighat Mandir is one of the most popular temples in the city of Kolkata. The temple is one among Shakti Peethas. According to the legend, the temple stands at the exact spot where Sati's toe fell during Shiva's Rudra Tandavam.

The idol of Goddess is depicted in a very unique way. The idol has three eyes with a an angered expression on its face along with its tongue hanging out and four hands. 

Many say that the temple was first seen during Chandragupta II's period while others say that the temple was first spotted in the 16th century. Other historians claim that the temple is over 200 years old.

Lastly, It is said that Kolkata got its name from this very themple1
