Elephanta caves

Elephanta caves are a collection of cave temples dedicated to lord shiva. It contains cut rocks of stone sculptures synchronising Hindu and Buddhist ideas. The  Caves are hewn from solid basalt rocks. Except for some exceptional sculptures, the others are damaged.
From the 19th century these caves are being an attraction in Mumbai. It is named after elepante, which was marphed into elephanta by the Portuguese. There were many elephant statues inside the caves. The main cave was the worship place of Hindus until the Portuguese had arrived and then it had become a common place of worship.
In 1987, the restored caves were designated a UNESCO world heritage site.  And now it is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)
