DMK
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was founded in the year 1949 by C.N. Annadurai. It is the oldest political party in Tamil Nadu.
In 1953 when M.G. Ramachandran joined the party, it became extremely popular. He was seen as the icon of the party for popularizing the symbol and flag.
DMK's first win though was in 1967 i.e., 18 years after its formation. In 1969, the party leader, C.N. Annadurai died. This led M. Karunanidhi to take the reigns of the chariot. Since then, he is the leader of the party with his son, M.K. Stalin as his successor.
With MGR's exit from the party and the formation of AIADMK, the party faced some hardships but gained strength in 1989, two years after MGR's death. Both AIADMK and DMK are well-known rivals during the Tamil Nadu state elections.
The party has also, faced many controversies since 1976 regarding corruption and embezzlement. Despite such problems, the party is strong and powerful.
